Memphis Greek Festival Commemorates 50th Anniversary
May 9 & 10, 2008
- Nick Kourvelas is aware of what draws our community to the Memphis Greek Festival every year. "It's the food." Kourvelas, who has volunteered at the festival since he was a teenager, is Chairperson of this year's event, held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. This is no small task as the festival commemorates its 50th anniversary on May 9th and 10th.
"Our festival offers the best tasting Greek food - and with a variety of options - at a great price." Kourvelas said. Foods like Greek salad, souvlakia (Greek-style shish-kebabs) and spanakopeta (spinach pie) are prepared by church volunteers and offered to hungry patrons. "For us, it's always been about making sure that everyone celebrating our heritage eats well and has a good time! That's what being Greek is all about!"
In addition to the food, those who attend the festival can also experience Greek dancing, live Greek music and take sanctuary tours of the church. They may also shop for imported Greek items and wines, as well as T-shirts featuring "Nicos," the festival's new mascot designed to help commemorate the festival's 50th anniversary.
Admission to the festival costs $2, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center and Youth Villages.
